Medical Dermatology

What is Medical Dermatology?

Also known as immunodermatology, this specialty involves the diagnosis and management of complex dermatologic diseases including: pemphigoid, pemphigus, dermatitis herpetiformis, lupus, scleroderma, dermatomyositis, psoriasis, and psoriatic arthritis, vasculitis, vitiligo, cutaneous lymphomas (e.g. mycosis fungoides). Also included in medical dermatology is wound care, which is the diagnosis and treatment of non-healing leg ulcers, cutaneous coagulopathies, pyoderma gangrenosum, diabetic foot ulcers, and some forms of pressure ulcers,

Medical Dermatology also involves the diagnosis and management of atypical or severe skin diseases such as generalized atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, various photosensitivity disorders, and the evaluation of "mystery rashes" .

Why am I seeking care from a medical dermatologist?

Most patients seeing a medical dermatologist are referred either by their primary dermatologist or another physician (PCP, rheumatologist, pulmonologist, podiatrist, etc.). Some patients are referred for second opinions, some for help with diagnosis and/or management. We also gladly see patients who are self-referred. We accept patients with many other skin conditions as well but do not offer any cosmetic dermatology services. Please call our front office to see if your skin problem is appropriate for our office.
