What is Medical Dermatologist?
Also known as immunodermatology, it involves the diagnosis and management of complex dermatologic diseases including: pemphigoid, pemphigus, dermatitis herpetiformis, lupus, scleroderma, dermatomyositis, rheumatoid and psoriatic arthritis, vasculitis, cutaneous lymphomas (e.g. mycosis fungoides). Also included in medical dermatology is wound care, which is the diagnosis and treatment of nonhealing leg ulcers, cutaneous coagulopathies, pyoderma gangrenosum, diabetic foot ulcers, and some forms of pressure ulcers.
Medical dermatology also involves the diagnosis and management of atypical or severe skin diseases such as generalized atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, and various photosensitivity disorders.
Why am I seeking care from a medical dermatologist?
Most patients seeing a medial dermatologist are referred either by their primary dermatologist or another physician (PCP, rheumatologist, pulmonologist, podiatrist, etc..). Some patients are referred for second opinions, some for help with diagnosis and/or management. We also gladly see patients who are self-referred.
Does this office offer routine skin care?
While Dr. Fivenson is well trained in general dermatology, he has chosen to limit his practice to the care of those patients with more complicated disease. Therefore, routine skin care for warts, acne, eczema, skin cancers, rashes, etc. should be through your primary dermatologists office. If you do not have a dermatologist, we will be happy to help you find someone in your area who can see you.
